My Divorce is Over, Now What? Reclaiming Your Life after Divorce

Divorce is like a roller coaster. The ups, the downs, and the upside downs bring chaos into your life and can leave you feeling disoriented. It’s quite the challenge to regain your bearings after divorce and return to a state of normalcy. While it’s by no means easy, it IS possible to restart your life after divorce, and can be an extremely rewarding process. To help you move forward, we’ve put together these strategies for re-entering life after divorce:

  • Take the time to get reacquainted with yourself. After being married for a long time, it’s easy to get lost in coupledom. It isn’t just you; it’s “we”. “We like to do this” or “we like to go here.” Post-divorce, find the time to get to know yourself again. What are your hobbies? What do you like most about yourself? Rediscovering what makes you “you” can be quite exhilarating, so get out there and get started!
  • Be there for your children. If you’re a parent, it’s essential that you tune in to what your children are experiencing following a divorce. Listen to them, ask them questions, and most importantly, validate their thoughts and feelings surrounding the divorce. Simply being present and empathic will go a long way toward returning both you and your children’s lives to a state of balance and stability.
  • Have a bit of fun! Now that you’ve had the chance to get reacquainted with yourself, it’s time to start living your newly single life to its fullest! All of those fun activities that you didn’t have time for when you were married are there just waiting for you to enjoy. Go catch a movie with your girlfriends or make an appointment for a well-deserved spa day.
  • Tap into your support network. You don’t have to do it alone. Rely on friends and family to support you and keep you grounded at a time when you need it most. Don’t ignore the power of your community either. Join a local group or volunteer at your local humane society. Becoming involved in your community allows you to focus outside yourself and onto giving back.

Divorce isn’t easy, but by taking proactive steps to move forward, your life after divorce can be more satisfying and rewarding than ever before.
